So, it’s important to only inquire with photographers who’s style you enjoy, and that you can envision your wedding day captured with.

To help you determine your style, ask yourself:

• Do I love natural, unposed, candid moments or a more guided, posed experience? Or maybe, a mix of both? I personally offer a good mix of both to provide variety and capture your personalities.

• Am I drawn to film-like tones, classic true-to-color, or modern, crisp images?

• What kind of emotions do I want my wedding photos to evoke?

Browse wedding photography portfolios, Instagram and Pinterest accounts to see what resonates with you. If my work speaks to you and you can envision yourselves in it, that’s a great sign we’d be a good match!

Boston has a vibrant wedding photography scene (and wedding industry as a whole), so narrowing down your options can totally feel overwhelming. But, it doesn’t have to be! Start by researching photographers who specialize in your preferred style and have experience shooting in a setting similar to what your wedding will be. For example, if you’re getting married in the city, someone who has a lot of photos in downtown could be a great option. Some things to look at are:

• Their portfolio (typically will be found on their blog through their website) and recent wedding galleries
  • If you inquire with a wedding photographer, you can always ask them to send you a few recent galleries!

• Client testimonials and reviews (Look on Google, their Instagram page, website, etc.)

• Experience with Boston or city venues (indoor, outdoor, darker locations, city settings, etc.)
  • Having experience in Boston is HUGE. This means that the photographer has done it before, and can handle the stress and chaos that can be the city. Boston wedding days are typically more challenging logistically, so it’s crucial to choose a photographer who can manage the day.

• Their approach to wedding days (hands-on or unobtrusive? How do they pose? What do they offer during the planning process? Do they help create a timeline and shot list?)

A strong portfolio paired with glowing reviews is a good indication of a reliable photographer who will deliver stunning results. However, don’t be discouraged if a vendor you’re researching doesn’t have a ton of reviews. It can sometimes be difficult for us wedding vendors to collect reviews! Think about how often you personally leave reviews for businesses. Is it every time you have a great experience? Or, do you find yourself only leaving a review when your experience was sub par? This is just something to consider-any great business will likely have at least five strong reviews.

Your wedding photographer will be by your side throughout one of the most important days of your life, so it’s essential that you feel comfortable with them. You may even spend more time with your photographer(s) than you do your partner! Beyond talent, a great photographer is someone who:

This way, the photographer can send pricing or refer you to another vendor who is in your price point if they are not.

• How many hours of coverage are included

• Second shooter availability (If they have another photographer who will shoot your wedding alongside them. This is a good option if your guest list is high, your venue is widespread, or you’ll be traveling to multiple locations)

• Is an engagement session included, or is it offered as an add on?

• Editing and delivery timelines – when will you receive your gallery back?

• How the images are delivered (Most photographers, like myself, deliver images through a private, online gallery where you can download, post, and print. But, its always good to ask rather than assume)

• Album and print options – do they offer to design an album for you?

• Have you shot at my venue before?
  • Remember, this is not the end all be all. While it can be a benefit for your photographer to have shot at your venue in the past, it is also totally okay if they haven’t. Many photographers do their best work at a venue they haven’t been to as their creativity will flow freely!

• What’s your backup plan in case of emergencies?
  • Will they send another photographer they trust? Will they cover that charge?

• How do you help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera? This is super important, as you want to feel relaxed and at ease on your wedding day.

Once you’ve found a photographer whose style and personality you love, don’t wait too long to secure your date! Inquire as soon as possible to see if they have availability. Some people book up years in advance!

Ideally, you should be researching and booking your wedding photographer right after you’ve secured your venue and or hired a wedding planner. A photographer is something that your wedding day cannot go on without, so don’t wait to book!
