Coastal Boston Engagement Photos on the North Shore

Sheila and Mark live just outside of Boston, but have a deep adoration for the coast. For their engagement photo session, they were wanting the vibe of a port/marina in Maine—without the travel. We settled on this adorable little port on the North Shore—Rockport, Massachusetts—where we were able to get the same coastal vibe for their photos.

While I often shoot engagement photos in Boston and along the North Shore, I hadn’t yet been to Rockport for a session! I have Sheila and Mark to thank for putting this gem of a location on my radar! Last year I had previously photographed a wedding in Rockport, MA, but it was in early April, so I wasn’t sure what the area looked like in the Summer. Once I arrived, and starting shooting I was so excited to see how stunning the area was! Even though it’s a small town, there is SO MUCH variety packed in. Getting to visit new locations is part of the fun of being a wedding/engagement photographer—it really gets my creative juices flowing and allows me to try new things. We had the best time exploring the port and using all Rockport had to offer as backgrounds for their images!

Honestly, if someone had shown me photos of Rockport prior to this session, I could have been totally fooled thinking it was Maine! Luckily, that’s exactly what we were going for. I love all the color and different scenery we captured. It was such a good time getting to know Sheila and Mark (I love getting to meet my couples prior to their wedding day) and bopping all around the area.

If you’re newly engaged (congrats!), you’re probably starting to think about when and where to take your engagement photos—and maybe feeling a little unsure about how to make the most of them. I get it! Most of the couples I work with haven’t had professional photos taken together before. But that’s where I come in.

As a wedding photographer based in Boston, I photograph engagement sessions all across Massachusetts and New England—from the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill to the beaches of Newburyport and even the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Whether you’re dreaming of a downtown city vibe or something coastal, beachy and relaxed, my goal is to make your session feel fun, natural, and completely reflective of your relationship.

Choosing Your Engagement Photo Location in Massachusetts or on the North Shore

When brainstorming and dreaming up your ideal engagement session, it’s important that you choose a location that either feels like you, or means something to you (or both!).

Start by thinking about what kind of setting fits your style and story. Do you gravitate toward the city? Nature? Somewhere with meaning to the two of you?

While these featured engagement photos were taken on the North Shore, some of my favorite ideas for Massachusetts engagement photos include:

• Boston engagement photos: Beacon Hill, the Seaport, Commonwealth Ave, the Public Garden, or even a rooftop overlooking the skyline.

• Coastal locations: Rockport, Cape Cod, anywhere on the North Shore, or a quiet beach like Plum Island with the gorgeous golden light over the ocean.

• Nature-focused: Gardens, open fields, hiking trails in Western MA, or the Arnold Arboretum in the spring.

• Somewhere personal: Your favorite café, go-to bar for a night out, the neighborhood where you had your first date, or even your home for a cozy, lifestyle session.

Insider Tip: Schedule Your Session Around the Best Light

Lighting makes such a difference for your photos. I typically only shoot during golden hour, and always recommend scheduling your engagement session around the sunset—either shortly after sunrise or right before sunset; within an hour or two of the sunset time.

• Evening sessions are especially dreamy in the spring and summer (and easier if you’re getting hair and makeup done beforehand).

• Summer sessions will be scheduled at the latest time in the evening, as the sun sets late!

• Fall sessions fill up quickly—September and October are prime months for New England foliage.

• Weekdays are often best if we’re shooting in a busier area like Boston or a beach town—fewer crowds = a more relaxed experience.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos

Prior to an engagement session, I always send a full outfit guide to my couples, but here are a few quick tips to get you started:

• Consider sticking to soft neutrals and muted tones—they photograph beautifully and allow you and your chosen location to stand out (cream, tan, olive, dusty blue, terracotta).

• Flowy fabrics, layers, and texture always translate well in photos.

• Avoid neon colors, busy patterns, large logos, or anything too distracting.

• Bring a second look for variety—one more elevated, one more casual—this will also allow you to do more with your photos since they will look different between your outfits.

• Most importantly, wear something that feels like you—these are just guidelines. When you feel good, it always shows.

Feeling Comfortable in Front of the Camera

You don’t need to rehearse poses or know what to do—I’ll guide you through the entire session so it never feels stiff, uncomfortable or overly posed.

I use natural prompts and movement to create space for real connection—so the final gallery reflects your relationship as it really is. Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments: the quick laughs, the quiet touches, the way you look at each other when you’re just being yourselves.

So, don’t stress and let loose! Some of my couples like to grab a drink or two before hand to allow themselves to let go a bit and be more comfortable! Overall, trust that I’m the professional and I’ll be there to guide you.

Seasonal Tips for Massachusetts / East Coast Engagement Sessions

One of the best things about planning engagement photos in Massachusetts, or really anywhere in the Northeast/East Coast is that every season brings its own beauty. The season you choose to schedule your session in will totally transform the look of your final gallery—so choose a season that’ll provide a backdrop that you love.

• Spring: Soft colors, blooming trees and flowers, and fresh light—perfect for gardens and parks.

• Summer: Long golden hours, lush greenery, and warm beach sessions with movement and color.

• Fall: Peak foliage, cozy outfits, and crisp sunsets. September–October is the time for bold New England colors.

• Winter: A snowy beach or wooded backdrop can be incredibly romantic and quiet (if you’re up for the chill!). Or, if you’re skiiers, that presents a whole other opportunity to make your session unique!

A Few Extras to Keep in Mind

These little things can make your session even smoother and more personal:

• Bring comfy shoes to swap into if we’ll be walking between locations.

• A small tote with water, touch-up makeup, a hair brush, and a lint roller goes a long way.

• Including your dog? I love it—just bring treats, a neutral leash, and a friend to help.

How to Use Your Engagement Photos

Your session is about more than save-the-dates (though they’re great for that too). Many of my couples also use their engagement photos for:

• Decorating your home with prints of your favorite photos that feel like you
