Planning a Boston proposal? The Seaport offers one of the most romantic backdrops in the city — even on a rainy day. This surprise proposal turned into an intimate, cinematic moment filled with emotion, laughter, and waterfront views. Here’s a glimpse into how it all unfolded and why a rainy Seaport evening might be the most magical setting of all.
There’s something so timeless about a Boston proposal—even more so when it unfolds on a rainy evening in the Seaport. Even though the weather didn’t seem ideal, it really was the perfect backdrop. The rain made the scene that much more romantic for the surprise proposal. As a Boston wedding photographer who often photographs intimate proposals, I love when couples embrace the unpredictable New England weather! Here’s a glimpse into how Noah and Natalie’s proposal in the Boston Seaport played out.
Noah and Natalie currently live in Dallas, Texas, but with Boston being a special city to their relationship, it was the perfect setting for the proposal. Noah planned a trip to Boston to spend some time in the city, and so Natalie could see her friends from college. Little did she know, she was actually traveling for her own proposal.
Like any surprise proposal, a whole scheme was at play behind the scenes. Noah had Natalie’s friends setup a nail appointment with her prior to the proposal. Natalie was under the impression that after the nail appointment, her and the girls were headed to get oysters in the Seaport. Natalie had NO idea what Noah had planned for her. And when I say no idea… I mean she actually canceled her own nail appointment (against the advice of her friends). She had gotten her nails done a few weeks prior, and didn’t feel the need to get them redone. This part of the story really cracks me up, because it goes to show how incredibly Noah had her fooled! Even though she wasn’t getting her nails done, she still went along with her friends.
After the nail appointment, the girls stopped back at one of their apartments in the Seaport to “use the bathroom”. In reality, they were stalling her to create a buffer for Noah to setup the proposal scene. Noah flew in Natalie’s parents and one of her closest friends, both from across the country. He also had another close friend of Natalie’s from college to help setup. Between all the help, we actually ended up not needing the buffer time at all, and then we were waiting for her! Which is funny—because no matter how much you plan, sometimes the timing still doesn’t align! However, of course we’d rather be waiting for her than for her to stumble upon Noah’s setup prior to him being ready.
When Natalie and the girls walked around the corner of the Institute of Contemporary Art and met Noah, she instantly knew what she walked into. Her own proposal! Noah absolutely nailed it with the surprise. Even after traveling across the country, and going to a nail appointment, she had no idea!
When Natalie and Noah approached the table he had set up with Polaroids, champagne, and a gorgeous bouquet, the tears started flowing. As Noah got down on one knee and popped the question, Natalie’s first comment was, “I can’t believe I canceled my nail appointment!”. It was pretty funny. I sympathized with her in this moment, because I could totally see myself doing the exact same thing and having no idea! Honestly though, her nails were still super fresh and looked perfect for the proposal.
As the two soaked up the sentimental moment after she said yes, Natalie still had no idea that her parents and best friend were waiting around the corner. Natalie’s parents began to walk towards her to congratulate her, but she was still in total shock. She actually looked directly at them, looked away, and didn’t realize they were standing right there! When she noticed, she was shocked that they were in Boston with her! Little did she know there was another person waiting for her, her best friend! She gave her friend the biggest hug and exclaimed, “What! How did you get here?” through a few tears. It was such a sweet moment to witness.
I’m sure at the same time Natalie was in shock, Noah was feeling super relieved seeing that his plan panned out perfectly. She was surprised, she said yes (of course), and then she was surprised all over again to see that the people closest to her were also there to celebrate!
The group celebrated with glasses of champagne, lots of hugs, tears, and joy all around. After soaking it all in, I pulled Natalie and Noah away from the group to take a few engagement photos. As a photographer, the best part of a proposal (besides the “yes!”) is listening to the explanation of the plan and the white lies that went along with it. As I mentioned before, Natalie really had no idea what he had planned!
A classic Boston engagement photo session is a favorite of mine. Now combine that with the emotions post proposal?? Its a Boston wedding photographer’s dream! We stayed nearby the group at the ICA, and walked around the boardwalk in the Seaport. Honestly, the rain looked incredible in the photos! And the best part is it was REAL. No, it wasn’t a perfect sunny day with the most clear view of the city. But it was real, and authentic to their proposal story.
Noah and Natalie’s rainy proposal in the Boston Seaport reminded me that weather doesn’t dictate the occasion. You do! Let’s be real—it’s New England. The weather is completely unpredictable. Don’t let it ruin your plans! Let it be a part of the story you’re telling. Rain honestly makes photos super romantic, especially in Boston! No matter the forecast, real emotion always shines through. And this proposal is the perfect example of that.
Planning a surprise Boston proposal? Hell yeah! I’ve got you covered. Below are some tips I’ve compiled as a Boston wedding photographer to help you plan the perfect proposal.
Boston has no shortage of picturesque locations that are the perfect backdrop for your proposal! Pretty much anywhere in the city will do! But, if you’re searching for the perfect spot to pop the question, here are a few locations to browse as potential options.
Timing makes all the difference for a Boston proposal. Spring and fall are always a great choice— the Public Garden is full of color in May, and Beacon Hill looks dreamy with fall leaves in October. Summer evenings bring soft golden light and warm weather along the Seaport or Esplanade. Winter proposals can be just as romantic, with twinkle lights at Christopher Columbus Park or the Boston Public Library courtyard. For the best light and fewer people, plan your proposal around sunrise or sunset — when the city is more calm and the light is soft.
The simple answer? OF COURSE you should hire a professional photographer for your Boston proposal! As a woman myself, I know that almost every woman wants a photographer there to capture the moment. There is nothing like getting to see your reactions in full resolution. Also, having professional photos done is a great way to share the news with friends and family, and to post on social media! If you’re planning a proposal, it’s best to book a photographer 1-3 months in advance to confirm availability.
If you’re planning a Boston proposal and want those once-in-a-lifetime reactions beautifully captured, I’d love to be part of it. From helping you choose the perfect location to making sure the moment feels effortless and true to you, I’ll be there to document every emotion.
